About Nature Mill:
A San Francisco Start – Russ Cohn is not easily impressed. Back in 2002, his home town of San Francisco started collecting food scraps for recycling into compost, alongside paper, bottles, cans, and plastics. ‘Now that really makes sense,’ he thought as he diligently separated his food scraps. Less landfill trash means less global warming.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t so easy. Within a few weeks, the green bins up and down his block became grimy and insect infested. A raccoon family took up residence in the neighborhood. Trash day became an unpleasant routine – especially on a warm day. In 2009 composting became mandatory, with “trash police” and fines awaiting those who don’t comply.
A Chance Discovery - Then a funny thing happened. Russ went on vacation without emptying the kitchen compost bucket. A nasty surprise awaited his return: the smell, the flies, and a very unpleasant clean-up job.
While grudgingly cleaning the bucket, he noticed it was warm. Microorganisms were hard at work already! The composting process had begun. Just a little more oxygen, some mixing, insulation, and a powerful air filter could make the natural process clean and reliable. Dozens of prototypes and patents later, the NatureMill home kitchen compost bin was born. Pretty soon, the product took off and was picked up by Home Depot and Amazon.
We’re up to great things. Just watch us. Someday everyone in the world will make compost, and what a difference that will make.
